The Power of Small Shifts

What happens when you change one small thing?

Greetings, Joy Champions!

Welcome back to Jon's Journal of Joy, your weekly burst of sunshine and encouragement straight from me, Jon The Encourager, to you! Grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let’s dive into some joy together!

This week, I’ve been thinking about the power of small shifts. You know those moments when you make a tiny change—like taking a different route to work, trying a new recipe, or just smiling at a stranger—and suddenly, the world feels a little brighter? That’s what I’m talking about. Big transformations don’t always start with grand gestures; sometimes, they begin with a single, brave step. And you, my friend, are absolutely capable of taking that step, no matter where you’re at in your journey.

Let me tell you about my buddy Billy, who reached out recently (big high-five to Billy!). He was feeling overwhelmed, juggling a demanding job and family life, and he thought joy was something he’d have to “schedule” for later. But instead of waiting for the perfect moment, he started small: he set a five-minute timer each morning to sip his coffee in silence and think about one thing he was grateful for. That’s it. Five minutes. Now, a month later, he says those moments have become his anchor, helping him find calm and clarity even on the craziest days. Small shift, huge impact.

That’s the magic I want for you this week. You don’t need to overhaul your life to find joy—you just need to nudge the dial a little. Maybe it’s swapping one negative thought for a positive one, like “I’m not enough” to “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.” Maybe it’s calling a friend you haven’t talked to in ages or dancing to your favorite song in the living room (bonus points for terrible dance moves). Whatever it is, trust that these small shifts are building something beautiful in you.

Joyful Tip of the Week: Create a “Joy Anchor” ritual. Pick one tiny action that feels good—like writing down a happy moment, taking three deep breaths, or listening to a song that lifts your spirits—and do it daily. Tie it to something you already do, like brushing your teeth or making breakfast, to make it stick. This little habit will ground you and remind you that joy is always within reach.

I also want to take a moment to celebrate YOU, our incredible community. Last week, I asked for your small wins, and wow, you delivered! From Lisa who finally organized her desk (and found a long-lost gift card!) to Tom who ran his first 5K, your stories are lighting up my inbox and my heart. Keep ‘em coming—reply to this email and share one thing that made you smile this week. I’ll pick a few to highlight (with your okay) in our next edition. Your victories, big or small, inspire us all.

Here’s a fun challenge to keep the good vibes flowing: spread joy like it’s contagious! Forward this newsletter to someone who could use a lift. And if you’re feeling extra bold, post a quick shoutout on social media about something that’s sparking joy for you—tag me so I can cheer you on!

You’re stronger, braver, and more amazing than you realize. Keep shining, keep shifting, and know that I’m in your corner, rooting for you every single day.

Love,
Jon
